Craig Westcarr scored a hat-trick as Notts County marked Steve Cotterill's first match in charge with a rout of nine-man Hereford at Meadow Lane.
A Sam Gwynne slip allowed Westcarr in for the opener, before the striker finished off a counter-attack for 2-0.
Hereford keeper Chris Adamson was sent off for fouling Westcarr in the box, allowing him to complete his treble.
Luke Rodgers's penalty made it four after Paul Downing, who saw red, handled, and he then tapped in a fifth.
New Notts County manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I think we have to give a fair amount of credit to Hereford. The two sendings-off were red cards by the letter of the law but you feel sorry for any team when they go down to nine men.
"The one thing we didn't do is pass for the sake of passing when we were a few goals up. We didn't look for the crowd to ole - that would have annoyed me.
"I think we were humble in our play, we actually went looking for more goals."
Hereford manager John Trewick told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "I just feel the same way as everybody else connected with the club as I am extremely disappointed.
"I look back to the first half and I feel we gave as good as we got, had several opportunities to score and gave away an awful goal.
"For most of the season that just about sums up the way things have gone as we have been well in games and have then given the opposition a head start."
