Notts County suffered a dent to their promotion hopes as Jamie Devitt's shot earned Grimsby a hard-fought draw.
Lee Hughes gave Notts the lead after 18 minutes when he deftly headed in from a Ben Davies free-kick.
But debutant Devitt curled home the Mariners' first meaningful chance on the stroke of half-time after being teed up by Peter Sweeney.
Hughes was sent off for a second yellow card following a challenge on goalkeeper Nick Colgan late on.
Notts County caretaker boss Dave Kevan told BBC Radio Nottingham: "Over the game we've had twenty efforts, and eleven of those on target, which is usually enough to win a football match.
"We felt relatively comfortable in the first period but in the end it's become a frustrating and a sad end with Lee as well.
"The sending off has crowned a miserable night. I'd be disappointed if Lee wasn't challenging the goalkeeper and trying to bundle the ball in the net and that's all he was doing."
