Substitute Shaun Miller rescued a point for Crewe to leave Torquay without a win in seven games.
Torquay made the better start and Chris Zebroski had already forced Steve Phillips into a good save when he curled in a seventh-minute effort.
Danny Stephens almost made it 2-0 but his low drive thumped against the post.
Calvin Zola had a goal disallowed for offside, but Crewe grabbed the leveller when Michael Poke failed to deal with a long ball, leaving Miller to slot in.
Crewe manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke:
"I thought it was a good standard game and I thought both sides played well.
"From being fairly even right at the start, we gradually got on top.
"I can't promise that we'll win our games, but I can promise that we'll play some football, and sometimes we'll play it very well."
Torquay boss Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon:
"It's not often that I get cross with them but I'm fuming to be honest.
"There was no danger we just needed to see the game out but we've got ourselves to blame.
"It was a soft goal and it's very disappointing for all of us."
