County moved up to fifth in League Two as first-half goals from Karl Hawley and Ben Davies denied stubborn Barnet.
The visitors played a 4-5-1 formation but soon found themselves behind as Mike Edwards headed down a Matt Hamshaw cross and Hawley swept home.
Davies then notched his third goal in three games with a superb free-kick.
County spurned several further chances while Barnet, now without a win in 14 games, created only one serious chance, with substitute John O'Flynn denied.
Notts County caretaker manager Dave Kevan told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"I'm very pleased for Karl, he's got a good strike in there and it'll do him the world of good.
"I've got to thank our supporters. I think they understood how difficult it was.
"They were fantastic, they stayed with the team and will go away pleased with the result."
Barnet manager Ian Hendon told BBC London 94.9:
"The pleasing thing was that Albert Adomah probably played his best game for months and that is very welcome.
"We put a lot of balls in there, in the second half and passed the ball on a very difficult pitch.
"I'm very disappointed with the result again, but there are positives to take out of the game."
