Northampton extended their unbeaten run to seven matches but neither goalkeeper had a save of note to make in a stalemate at Sixfields.
Peter Gilbert fired just wide from 25 yards for the home side and top scorer Adebayo Akinfenwa headed over.
Chesterfield's best chance came on the stroke of half-time when Barry Conlon headed an Ian Morris free-kick over.
Courtney Herbert failed to capitalise on some defensive hesitancy and then shot over as the Cobblers were denied.
Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson tells BBC Radio Northampton:
"I think in terms of possession, and the football we played, it was good. But the clinical finishing was lacking.
"They'd never threatened us at all, but you're always wary they'd snatch one at the end
"When you're not producing the quality you would like it's important to take a point from the game. But it's disappointing with our last attacking third."
Chesterfield defender Aaron Downes told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"We've come here to be solid away from home and a clean sheet, you can't really ask more from us. Defensively the team were fantastic.
"We tried to stop their play and did our job. We'll take our point from here.
"We're not scoring a lot at the moment, like we did at the start of the season but we are keeping clean sheets."
