Tadhg Purcell scored on his first game in English football as struggling Darlington stunned Rotherham.
Irishman Purcell - signed from Shamrock Rovers this month - cut in from the left and drilled home a low shot to give the visitors a surprise lead.
And they scored again when Gary Smith forced home Mor Diop's pass after the home defence was caught napping.
Micky Cummins pulled one back from close range but the Quakers held on for their first away win of the season.
Rotherham boss Ronnie Moore told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"It's disappointing when they showed more enthusiasm and we had so many who were off [the pace] it's not true.
"We've struggled setting the tempo since I've been here. The tempo came in the last 15 minutes when there was no fear factor to me they looked like a bag of nerves.
"There were too many lacklustre performances. I can't put hand on heart and say anyone played well."
