Bournemouth scored two late goals to come back from a goal down to stun Torquay in a game with 12 bookings.
The visitors looked set to claim a fourth successive league win when Scott Rendell converted Lee Mansell's pass.
With two minutes remaining Liam Feeney equalised with a shot into the top corner to set up the frantic finale.
Just after Rendell wasted a chance to win it for Torquay, Brett Pitman fired in the penalty to seal the points after he was fouled by Chris Robertson.
The controversial finish prompted Gulls manager Paul Buckle to confront referee Jarnail Singh on the pitch.
Seven of the yellow cards were issued to Torquay players which will cost the club a £1,000 fine.
Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Solent:
"It looked like we were struggling to get anything out of the game at one stage and then we end up with three points so it's really positive signs for us.
"There was a lot of stopping and starting in the game.
"We'd like to see it flow a bit more - really you just want the football to do the talking."
Torquay United boss Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon:
"We played very well and carried on where we left off performance wise, the only thing that was missing was something for our troubles.
"But we were out done by a wonder goal and a penalty that I think the referee got horribly wrong.
"Both sets of crowds and players were great though.
"There were some decisions I was unhappy with. The referee has to be 100% sure to give a penalty, and if he's not 100% sure you can't give it. Unfortunately he was influenced by a big crowd behind the goal and we came away with nothing.
"But that's enough of that, we were great today."
