Substitute Billy McKay came off the bench to score a late winning goal to give Northampton a boost in their fight to escape the League Two drop zone.
McKay fired home a shot on the turn in a goalmouth scramble to win the game with two minutes remaining.
Dagenham earlier missed a penalty when Andy Holt, who was later sent off for a second yellow, handled in the area.
Mark Arber blazed the spot-kick over the bar before McKay sealed a first league win since October.
Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson told BBC Radio Northamptonshire:
"We're delighted with the win, that takes us unbeaten in 3 now so we try and stay positive. It's all about the result. I thought it was OK, nothing spectacular; I thought we defended ever so well. We needed a win, we got it and we're happy."
Dagenham and Redbridge manager John Still told BBC Essex:
"Disappointing to lose, we didn't look like being defeated. They scored from about their only shot and the conditions were difficult.
"Away from home we have always been solid but haven't created too many opportunities."
