Burton's long unbeaten home record came to an end at the hands of Accrington.
Albion had not lost at the Pirelli Stadium since mid-September, but keeper Shane Redmond had already made two good saves before Stanley went ahead.
Billy Kee headed in Sean McConville's cross from eight yards just before half-time to give Accrington the lead.
Stanley continued to control the game and got a deserved second when Michael Symes side-footed in Luke Joyce's 76th-minute corner.
Burton manager Paul Peschisolido tells BBC Radio Derby: "We were an absolute shambles.
"We've just been given a lesson in how to defend, how to play football. They beat us to every ball, they won every second ball. Defensively they were absolutely solid; we couldn't get a touch without someone coming through us.
"I will back them to the world as long as they put in the display of working hard and I don't think they did that today. We were outfought, outmuscled, out everything.
"I'm frustrated because I know we can do better than that. We have never had a problem with work-rate and that's what's just happened today. It was unacceptable."
