Port Vale substitute Rob Taylor curled a stunning equaliser from 25 yards to earn his side a point at Torquay.
The home side took the lead when Doug Loft fired a rasping half-volley into the top corner.
Torquay drew level through Nicky Wroe's first-time drive and almost took the lead when Chris Zebroski hit the post.
Scott Rendell's header from a Wayne Carlisle cross made it 2-1 to Torquay before Taylor swapped passes with Sean Rigg and found the net to grab a point.
Torquay United manager Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon:
"We fell behind, came back and showed great character to get ourselves in front. And if we could have just held on for that 10 minute spell afterwards, we'd have been OK.
"Credit to us again, we've come here and created chances, made a couple of changes and I thought that Rendell did brilliantly up top for us, scoring a great goal.
"We're all desperate to turn these draws into wins, but certainly one defeat in 10 isn't bad at all."
