Hereford survived a late Shrewsbury rally to claim a hard-fought derby win.
The hosts swept into the lead in the fourth minute when Ryan Valentine scored from the penalty spot after Kevin McIntyre brought down Keith Lowe.
Gavin McCallum extended the lead with a low shot to the far corner of the net before Waide Fairhurst scored from close in after a goal-mouth scramble.
Hereford had the better of the second 45, but needed a last-minute Kenny Lunt clearance to secure victory.
Hereford United manager John Trewick told BBC Hereford & Worcester:
"The conditions were poor but what I asked for before the game was a bit of toughness and a bit of character.
"I think the players showed that, after last Saturday when we were a bit soft and gave away goals too easily.
"I did not want to see that again and in the second half we didn't pass the ball well. But when we put the two things together we will improve again.
"I thought we started the game well and put some good moves together.
"I did not get a good look at the penalty. But we have been on the wrong end of a few decisions in recent weeks so maybe this has evened it up a bit."
Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson told BBC Radio Shropshire:
"We got beaten because we didn't start the game properly, simple as that.
"To be a good side you've got to be able to start games properly.
"Although we kept pushing and trying to get things going, we didn't deal with the conditions well enough.
"We panicked. We were lumping it, trying too many long and high balls when we've told them to get it into feet.
"It's disappointing, because we probably did enough to get ourselves back in the game but if you give any team a head start at any standard, they're going to beat you."
