Chesterfield moved to within three points of the League Two leaders by thumping bottom-side Darlington.
Rob Page volleyed home a Dave Perkins corner for Chesterfield's first before Mark Allott's low shot made it 2-0.
The Quakers got one back through James Collins' 35-yard lob but Kieran Djilali scored from a tight angle to restore the home side's two-goal advantage.
Jonathan Hogg's close-range strike gave Darlington hope, but Scott Boaden's double sealed victory for Chesterfield.
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Sheffield:
"The most pleasing thing is the three points. They made if very difficult, and I knew they would, so to come out 5-2 winners is very pleasing.
"Once we scored the first goal, I thought we were in control from there.
