Aaron Webster grabbed a late winner for Burton after Hereford had twice battled from behind in a five-goal thriller.
Shaun Harrad put Burton ahead when he punished slack marking and fired the ball in from 15 yards.
Leon Constantine levelled with a diving header but his handball gave Burton a penalty two minutes later and Harrad notched from the spot to make it 2-1.
Constantine equalised again with another header but Webster nodded in John McGrath's free-kick late on.
Burton Albion manager Paul Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby:
"I thought we were good today, defensively we could have blown it at the end.
"For the majority of the game, the whole team performance and the lads' never say die attitude was superb.
"We had goals from set pieces as well so we had it all today."
