Morecambe held off a late Crewe rally to secure their first away win of the season and push the hosts ever closer to the League Two relegation zone.
Jim Bentley opened the scoring with a far post header after Crewe keeper Steve Phillips had fumbled a corner.
And Phil Jevons doubled the visitors' lead in fine style before the break, turning and firing into the corner.
Joel Grant and Byron Moore forced good saves before Steven Schumacher's header made it 2-1, but Morecambe held firm.
Crewe Alexandra caretaker manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke:
"Obviously conceding at corners is a major problem, so what we've got to try and find someone who can head the ball out of our box.
"The game was winnable and I thought we played some good stuff in the second half without ever really having that cutting edge.
"We haven't really got great goal scorers in the squad, there isn't really anybody out there with a great record of scoring goals".
