Barry Conlon grabbed a welcome point for 10-man Grimsby with a goal in the fifth minute of injury time.
Gary King put Accrington ahead after beating the offside trap and firing past Nick Colgan, before an Adrian Forbes levelled for Grimsby.
Oliver Lancashire was red-carded when he handled on the line, and Phil Edwards dispatched the penalty.
But substitute Conlon nodded home from a Bradley Wood free-kick to end a run of five consecutive defeats.
