Two goals from Hereford's Marc Pugh, either side of Steve Fletcher's strike, consigned league leaders Bournemouth to their second defeat of the season.
Winger Pugh opened the scoring for the hosts when beating keeper Shwan Jalal with a low shot from close range.
Bournemouth levelled on the hour when veteran striker Fletcher turned in the area and fired past Adam Bartlett.
But Pugh struck again in the 78th minute when he lashed the ball into the far corner of the net from 12 yards.
Hereford manager John Trewick told BBC Hereford and Worcester:
"We've put on a performance against the league leaders and I think we should take a lot of heart from that.
"The discipline and that side of things was good and hopefully we will not slip any more.
"We have put on this performance off the back of a 4-1 defeat which sounds like a hammering, but it wasn't."
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Solent:
"I thought it was a tough game. I always knew it would be - never easy."
"I praise the lads' attitude and commitment. They never let their heads drop. And, on another day, we could have come away with a draw."
