Second-half goals from Will Buckley and Chris O'Grady secured victory for Rochdale at bottom-placed Darlington.
Darlington striker Kevin Gall missed several early chances while Rochdale's Simon Whaley also cleared an Ian Miller header off the line.
But Rochdale took the lead on the hour when Buckley fired in at the near post from close range after Darlington had failed to clear Tom Kennedy's corner.
O'Grady sealed the victory when he superbly volleyed home Whaley's cross.
