A late Danny North strike gave Grimsby their first home victory of the season at the expense of Hereford, who replace them in the League Two relegation zone.
The highlight of a scrappy first half came when Josh Lillis saved well to repel Glen Southam's curling effort.
Grimsby should have gone ahead as North was played clear by Peter Sweeney but fired straight at keeper Adam Bartlett.
North made amends when he collected a Sweeney pass and headed home from close range after his first effort was saved.
