Veteran striker Barry Hayles slotted a late winner as Cheltenham left it late to earn their first win in a month.
The hosts had the early chances, with Dave Worrall seeing a shot deflected over and Ryan Lowe hitting the bar.
Visiting goalkeeper Scott Brown had to palm away a close-range strike from Lowe after the break but the game seemed destined to end in a draw.
That was before Hayles rounded Wayne Brown in the fourth minute of added time and slid home superbly.
Cheltenham boss Martin Allen told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"It was a great result, it was a very solid disciplined performance, we kept our shape and limited them to very few opportunities.
"We didn't threaten a great deal ourselves, but I always thought that on the break there were would be a chance as the game went on and that was the case - it was a great goal by Barry Hayles to win us the match.
"Three points and a clean sheet away from home's brilliant."
