Debutant Jordan Robertson's header earned Bury their first away win since February as Darlington blew a chance of a point by missing a late penalty.
Bury had much the better of the first half, with Ryan Lowe denied by keeper David Knight and captain Paul Scott shooting just over the bar.
Robertson stooped to head in a David Worrall cross and only a goal-line clearance stopped Lowe making it 2-0.
Late on Wayne Brown brought down Curtis Main but saved Dean Windass's penalty.
