Shrewsbury and Bury meet again at Gigg Lane for Sunday's second leg
Neil Ashton's freakish late own goal handed Bury a narrow advantage in the League Two play-off semi-final first leg at Oteley Road.
Attempting to play the ball back to Luke Daniels, Town left-back Ashton inadvertently lobbed his own keeper from over 20 yards.
Top scorer Grant Holt went close for Town when he hit the post after Wayne Brown parried a Ben Davies effort.
Late on, Holt grabbed Steve Haslam around the throat as tempers flared.
Shrewsbury now have to hope that finding their away form so late in the League Two season will help in Sunday's second leg at Gigg Lane.
Having gone eight months without a league victory on their travels, they won their last two away games (at Rotherham and on the final day at Dagenham & Redbridge) to sneak into the play-offs.
But, set against that, their last away defeat came on their most recent trip to Gigg Lane, the league meeting with Bury on 10 April when Town old boy Glynn Hurst hit the Shakers' late winner in a 2-1 victory.
Paul Simpson told BBC Radio Shropshire:
"We didn't deserve to lose to a goal like that.
"Neil Ashton's a bit down but I just said to him 'Look, you've been magnificent for us lately. These things happen.
"Another day it might have rolled past the post.
"And their goal has led a charmed life. Their keeper made save after save.
"And, let's face it, it's not the first time we've had to go somewhere to get a result over the last few weeks."
