Ryan Lowe was the hero as Chester gave themselves a chance of league survival with their first win since Boxing Day.
Dave Mannix headed his first goal for the club before Lowe doubled City's deserved lead from close range early in the second half.
But, after visiting keeper John Danby suffered a shoulder injury, Lowe had to go in goal for the last 10 minutes.
And, although beaten by Mike Edwards in a fraught finale, Lowe did make two saves to keep Chester's noses in front.
