Chesterfield moved into the play-off zone despite being held to a goalless draw by a hardworking Darlington side.
The home side had the upper hand but created few clear chances, although Scott Boden was unlucky when his late header came back off a post.
But Darlington had their moments too, with Franz Burgmeier and Pawel Abbott drawing good saves from Tommy Lee.
They nearly snatched a late win when Jason Kennedy got round the defence but Jared Wilson was on hand to block.
