Charlie McDonald scored the decisive goal to maintain Brentford's lead at the top of League Two, while Grimsby drop into the relegation zone.
A strong wind caused problems all night but when Grimsby keeper Wayne Henderson dropped a high ball, Marcus Bean could only blast over the empty net.
Brentford swept ahead when Adam Newton's first-time ball was guided home by MacDonald.
And the Bees comfortably held on throughout a very windy second half.
