Chester got their season up and running with a crushing defeat of Barnet.
Kevin Ellison started the rout when he drove the ball into the bottom corner and Ryan Lowe slotted home a second from an Ellison cross.
Paul Linwood volleyed in from close range, Kevin Roberts added a fourth and Lowe got his second of the game to complete Chester's scoring.
Cliff Akurang grabbed a consolation when he fired home after an attempted clearance deflected into his path.
Chester City manager Simon Davies told BBC Radio Merseyside:
"It's good for the lads and I think the supporters needed it, everyone at the club needed it, we've worked ever so hard.
"I just said to them if they can grind out games, they don't like doing the ugly things as they don't think it's the right thing to do but we needed to turn them to put them under pressure.
"On chances alone we could have been into double figures and it's pleasing to see that."
