Goalkeeper Phil Barnes was Grimsby's hero as he kept Rochdale at bay at Blundell Park.
Barnes produced a stunning save to claw away Chris Dagnall's drive from eight yards out.
The Grimsby keeper then twice denied Adam Rundle, who then fired into the side-netting when well-placed.
Grimsby's best chance saw Martin Butler latch on to a short back-pass, only for Dale keeper Sam Russell to tip his effort round the post.
