Liam Dickinson's brace gave Stockport the points despite hosts Rochdale doing all the running from first to last. Dickinson slotted Adam Griffin's pull back before Dale's Glenn Murray had a goal ruled out and Tom Kennedy's free-kick was tipped onto the woodwork.
Conrad Logan kept Dale at bay after the break, saving Murray's header and Adam LeFondre's curler before Dickinson met a Griffin free-kick with a header.
LeFondre slotted a penalty when Jason Taylor handled, but County clung on.
