Both sides had chances to win at the Darlington Arena but a goalless stalemate proved the fair result. The home side, already without top scorers Tommy Wright and Pawel Abbot, lost keeper Andy Oakes in the warm-up.
Matt Green's close range effort was turned away by Chesterfield keeper Barry Roache, while Felix Bastians fired narrowly wide for the visitors.
Bastians headed against a post and Jamie Ward was denied by a superb save from home keeper David Stockdale.
