MK Dons 1-2 Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury win 2-1 on aggregate

By Paul Fletcher

Andy Cooke was the hero for Shrewsbury with two goals
Shrewsbury-born Cooke was on the scoresheet twice
Shrewsbury substitute Andy Cooke scored twice as his team sealed a place in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

Cooke scored from eight yards to put the Shrews ahead before Keith Andrews bundled home an equaliser for MK Dons.

But Cooke's brilliant finish with the outside of his right foot 92 seconds later restored the Shrews' lead.

Gareth Edds's deflected shot hit the post but the Shrews held on for a 2-1 aggregate victory and will meet Bristol Rovers in the final on 26 May.

The MK Dons had finished fourth at the end of the regular season, finishing one point behind Swindon.

But defeat to Shrewsbury means Dons manager Martin Allen has tasted play-off defeat for the third consecutive year after two near misses with former club Brentford.

Allen had promised an improvement after Monday's goalless draw in the first leg and his team, bolstered by the return of Clive Platt, quickly adjusted to the extremely blustery conditions.

Shrewsbury, in contrast, struggled to clear their lines and it took a good block from Richard Hope to divert Dominic Blizzard's 20-yard strike over the crossbar.

The Shrews eventually enjoyed a spell of possession and started to threaten, although Kelvin Langmead could not direct his header on target after meeting a teasing free-kick.

Leo Fortune-West then seemed certain to convert a cross but was denied by a superb finger-tip clearance from Ademole Bankole.

A long punt forward from Bankole caught out the Shrews defence early in the second half, with Izale McLeod latching on to the ball and closing in on goal only to direct his effort wide under pressure from the advancing Scott Shearer.

But Cooke, on for Fortune-West at the break, broke the deadlock after 58 minutes with his first-time finish.

The goal owed a lot to Daniel Hall's brilliant lofted pass that played Cooke through on goal with the Dons defence caught static.

Another superb build-up culminated in Symes cutting into the area and making space for a shot, but it lacked power and Bankole saved.

Symes's profligacy was almost immediately punished but Platt's glancing header across goal just missed the target.

Andrews drilled a half volley over the bar as the home team pushed numbers forward in search of an equaliser.

But he managed to find the net at the near post after Platt had guided a deep cross back across goal.

Shearer blocked Andrews's initial header but was powerless to prevent the Dons skipper bundling the ball home.

Cooke restored Shrewsbury's lead inside two minutes with a right-foot finish from wide of the goal.

The Dons felt Cooke was guilty of a foul on his way to goal but the referee allowed play to continue.

The match opened up considerably and Symes might have scored with a header while the Dons came close to equalising for a second time on several occasions.

McLeod lifted his strike on the turn over the bar from six yards while Edds's strike took a significant deflection before rebounding off the post.

With full-time approaching, Jude Stirling drilled a strike over the crossbar and Shearer made a fingertip save to keep his team on top.

  • MK Dons manager Martin Allen:

"We had quite a lot of opportunities but it was not to be.

"I believe that with our squad we should have had promotion without the play-offs. It has been lost over the last 10 months, not this defeat.

"The players had a go but home games in the play-offs are never easy to play in."

  • Shrewsbury manager Gary Peters:

"The players worked their socks off. There is great rejoicing now.

"Both of Andy Cooke's finishes were brilliant. I felt that we had another goal in us after they equalised and we just kept going.

"The players are so excited now but just half the job is done. If you go to Wembley and lose it is a horrible day."
