League Two ones to watch

By Mandeep Sanghera

The race for promotion from League Two is expected to be typically tight with plenty of teams expected to be in the melting pot.

The stage is set for players to make their mark by giving their side the extra edge this season.

BBC Sport checks out six youngsters who could prove the difference between success and failure.

JAMES BROWN (Hartlepool)

Hartlepool have high hopes for striker Brown who they consider a clinical finisher with an eye for goal.

An injury in pre-season forced the 19-year-old to miss the majority of the 2005/2006 campaign, although he did return for the final four games.

He scored in the final game of the season against Port Vale but his return was too late for him to help stop the club being relegated.

Brown also has the task of trying to help fill the void left by forward Adam Boyd, who has been sold to Luton.

GILES COKE (Mansfield)

Mansfield midfielder Giles Coke

There will be plenty of eyes from the higher divisions trailing the progress of attacking midfielder Coke.

Several clubs, including Watford, have already been linked with the 20-year-old who has yet to commit to a new deal at Field Mill.

He started at Queens Park Rangers but failed to earn a professional contract at the London club and moved into non-league football with Kingstonian.

He has bounced back from that setback to emerge as one of League Two's most promising talents.

Coke provides energy and drive from midfield and, although he scored six goals last season, he will be hoping to improve on that this coming term.

LEWIS HALDANE (Bristol Rovers)

Haldane's future at Rovers is riding on his performances this season as he is in the final year of his deal at the Memorial Ground.

A striker by trade, he was played on the right-wing when used last season but fell out of favour with former boss Ian Atkins.

Haldane believes that experience has added a versatility to his game but makes no secret of the fact he prefers to play up front.

The 21-year-old is keen to get an extended run in attack to prove his goalscoring capabilities and earn a new deal.

RICHIE RYAN (Boston)

Boston boss Steve Evans is a firm believer in the talents of playmaking midfielder Ryan after capturing him during the summer.

Former Sunderland player Ryan was released by Scunthorpe at the end of last season and had a spell training at Port Vale.

But Evans moved quickly to sign Ryan, who played a minor part in Scunthorpe's promotion last season.

The 21-year-old has impressed during training but will be out to justify the faith of Evans by becoming more of a major force for Boston this time around.

But an ankle injury picked up in pre-season could hinder Ryan's progress.

DEAN LEWINGTION (MK Dons)

MK Dons' Dean Lewington

The left-back came through the ranks at the club formerly known as Wimbledon and will be an important member of the side for the coming season.

The club's player of the season for 2003/2004, he made 48 appearances during the past campaign.

The 22-year-old penned a new deal just before the start of the season to end speculation of a possible move to League One side Huddersfield.

Manager Martin Allen's delight at fending off interest in Lewington gave notice of his importance to the club's promotion hopes.

An uncompromising competitor, Lewington can also play on the left of midfield and is not afraid to get forward.

TAMIKA MKANDWIRE (Hereford United)

Central defender Mkandwire played a crucial part in helping Hereford to promotion last season.

The former West Bromwich Albion trainee was a mainstay in the side as he made 42 appearances for the Bulls.

His pace, positional sense and aerial strength make him a tough opponent and he also regularly contributes goals, with a tally of eight for the past campaign.

The Malawi-born 23-year-old was signed by Hereford after two loan spells and will be the club captain for the upcoming campaign.
