It was a hard-fought encounter at Whaddon Road
Cheltenham Town reached the League Two play-off final after a draw secured a 2-1 aggregate victory over Wycombe.

The visitors pushed hard, but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in a tense encounter at Whaddon Road.

Wycombe's leading scorer Tommy Mooney and the dangerous Kevin Betsy made plenty of running, but rarely found space behind the Robins' stout defence.

Stephen Guinan missed Cheltenham's best chance when he shot over the bar from six yards with 20 minutes remaining.

Wycombe's best moments came at the start of the second half.

A teasing cross from Betsy rolling across the box was not converted and Mooney fired over from Danny Senda's low cross.

And it took a last-gasp lunge from Gavin Caines to stop Jermaine Easter sending Matt Bloomfield clear.

But the Chairboys were to pay for their lack of a cutting edge in front of goal, as Cheltenham booked a date against Grimsby at the Millennium Stadium on 28 May.

  • Cheltenham boss John Ward:
"This game could have gone to Wycombe - it just happened to be the night for Cheltenham Town.

"We had to defend for large parts of the game because Wycombe made us do that. It was nothing I had set out or my players wanted to do - we wanted to try and take it on but Wycombe are an excellent team.

"In two games, my back four and goalkeeper have been terrific."

  • Wycombe assistant boss Steve Brown:
"The lads are destroyed in the dressing room. I'm so proud of them. That's the best performance I've seen that we've produced in the second half of the season.

"A goal would've made it a great performance but I couldn't ask any more of them.

"If I'm being super-critical we could have finished better, but I'm delighted with them. They came here knowing what they needed today and they set about it with relish."
