Swansea manager Kenny Jackett's gamble of dropping captain Roberto Martinez from the squad paid off as his side won for the first time this season. A trademark Kevin Nugent header from an Adrian Forbes cross put the Swans ahead after 22 minutes.
Andy Robinson then struck on 61 minutes when he rifled home a vicious swerving drive from over 30-yards out.
Pat McCourt fired just over for the top for Rochdale and then drew a decent save from Swans keeper Willy Gueret.
