Brighton saw off Swindon to pick up seven consecutive league wins for the first time since 1956.
Gary Dicker's penalty put the Seagulls ahead after Andy Frampton illegally halted Craig Noone's run but David Prutton's 25-yard strike made it 1-1.
Frampton gave away another penalty when he fouled Glenn Murray. although this time David Lucas saved Dicker's effort.
Mike Grella struck the bar for the Robins but Murray secured the historic win with a hard, low strike.
Brighton are still unbeaten at home this season and have won their last nine matches at the Withdean Stadium.
The result means Swindon remain second from bottom of League One, while Brighton moved 13 points clear at the top.
Brighton manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex: "People keep looking at the table and saying it's job done, but it's not and we have to keep motivating the players to get the results but we need to be proud of this team.
"People don't realise how difficult it is to take one penalty, and imagine what it's like to take two - it's not easy.
"Glenn Murray is very tired as he has played so many 90 minutes, and we wanted to rest him but we couldn't and he produced a great goal from nothing.
