Brighton's promotion push goes on after a slightly fortuitous win at Oldham.
The Seagulls went close through Chris Wood but they needed keeper Casper Ankergren to be at his best to deny Dale Stephens' 25-yard rocket.
Filipe Morais shot wide before forcing another save from Ankergren while Glenn Murray hit the bar for the visitors.
Ashley Barnes grabbed the winner when he burst through to slot home despite cries of offside, while Latics' Kieran Lee shaved a post in injury time.
Oldham manager Paul Dickov told BBC Radio Manchester: "I've just asked the boys if any of them have ran over a black cat or something to bring us bad luck.
"We should have had two penalties in the game, and the Brighton goal was offside.
"It's not going for us, but if the players keep putting in the performances like they did today in the last nine games, we'll be ok."
Brighton boss Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex: "We thought we would start well because we have been training very well - that was wrong.
"Today Gary Dicker was at his best and made the whole team play football, we needed him to keep the ball.
"We always say during the season you are going to have a chance, so injuries give other players opportunities and we need everyone in the squad."
