Notts County eased their relegation worries with their first victory in four matches as Sheffield Wednesday's poor home league run continued.
Alan Gow scored the only goal of the game as he converted a penalty after he had been fouled by Mark Beevers.
Njogu Demba-Nyren missed a chance to make it 2-0 when he was denied by Nicky Weaver, before Ivan Sproule shot wide.
Clinton Morrison had a header saved for the Owls, who have now not won a home league match since 11 December.
Notts County assistant manager Alex Rae told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I think we made it a bit more difficult than we would have liked.
"We created a number of chances in the second half, some good positions, some good interplay to get the opportunities.
"If we had got the second one it would have let us breathe a bit easier. It invites pressure, particularly when it's a big crowd here but it's a massive three points for us."
Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson told BBC Radio Sheffield: "We changed the formation , we put two up front which people have been advising me to do and that's the way forward. Consequently we didn't work their goalkeeper enough.
"The game looked a little stale in the middle of the park.
"They didn't create anything themselves but the first chance they get, our defending was remarkable poor."
