Tommy Miller's first-half goal downed Carlisle to hand Sheffield Wednesday their first win in 11 games and Gary Megson his first as manager.
Carlisle's Matty Robson blocked Gary Medine's header on the line but the rebound fell to Miller who blasted into the roof of the net.
Wednesday keeper Nicky Weaver played his part in the important win.
Ben Marshall's curling effort was clawed wide by the goalkeeper, as was Peter Murphy's late header.
