Hartlepool battled to a goalless draw with promotion-chasing Southampton.
Jose Fonte nearly put the visitors ahead, but saw his effort blocked on the line by Sam Collins.
Visiting goalkeeper Kelvin Davies was in fine form to keep out an Antony Sweeney volley and a 25-yard effort from Peter Hartley.
Sweeney could have won it late on for the hosts, but lost his footing as he tried to turn in a Colin Larkin cross, and both sides settled for a point.
Hartlepool United first-team coach Mick Wadsworth tells BBC Tees: "They're a really good team and we equipped ourselves was excellent.
"We worked incredibly hard, and from working hard it produced some good football as well.
"We were on the front foot a lot of the game, it ebbed and flowed and I think both teams committed to the game very well."
Southampton boss Nigel Adkins told BBC Radio Solent: "That was a competitive game. We had opportunities, we just had to put one away.
"We knew it was going to be competitive.
"I just thought we could have run out strong in the second half, unfortunately that wasn't the case because we never put the ball in the back of the net."
