Lateef Elford-Alliyu netted a brace as Tranmere secured a vital win at fellow strugglers Plymouth.
Elford-Alliyu latched on to an Enoch Showumni knockdown to fire past Tranmere goalkeeper David Button.
Button nearly stopped the striker's second goal but could only palm Elford-Alliyu's effort into the net.
Showumni broke through the Plymouth defence to extend the visitor's lead before Joe Mason struck a late consolation goal for the home side.
Plymouth boss Peter Reid told BBC Radio Devon: "We conceded bad goals from our point of view, but we possibly could have had a penalty early on.
"We weren't really threatening enough from an attacking point of view and if you're not doing that you've got to try and keep a clean sheet.
"We're trying to give the fans what they want but we're not doing it well enough at the moment, but they're behind us - they keep backing us and we've got to give them something."
Tranmere assistant manager Kevin Summerfield told BBC Radio Merseyside:
"I thought we played very well today and we were very pleased with the way we set ourselves out.
"Lateef Elford-Alliyu has done great for us and I think that's four goals he's got for us now.
"He's a great kid, he works hard for the team and he's got a bright future ahead of him."
