Glenn Murray's brace helped Brighton ease to a fourth successive home win at the expense of downtrodden Hartlepool.
Chris Wood fired in the opener through a crowd of players and Murray made it 2-0 inside 17 minutes with a tap-in.
Substitute Craig Noone added a third from close range after the break before Murray grabbed his second with a cool finish when one-on-one.
Antony Sweeney stole in to score from six yards but it was scant consolation for the visitors.
Brighton boss Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex: "It's nice when you play well, create chances and score goals. From my point of view the game should have been over by half time. I'm more pleased with the first twenty minutes of the second half when we went and finished the game.
"Glenn (Murray) could have had seven or eight. I'm happy for him. We're trying to get one of our strikers to 20-plus goals and we're trying to get Glenn there.
"I think in the first half the best of the three strikers was Ashley Barnes but he was not in a position to score."
