A dramatic injury-time equaliser from Gary Jones kept Rochdale in the hunt for a League One play-off place and denied lowly Tranmere a vital victory.
The hosts, who remain one place above the relegation zone, took the lead when Lateef Elford-Alliyu collected a pass from Ian Goodison and blasted home.
Dale Jennings should have made it 2-0 but missed the target when well-placed after fine work from Enoch Showunmi.
That miss proved to be costly as Jones headed in from Scott Wiseman's cross.
Tranmere manager Les Parry told BBC Radio Merseyside: "The late goal (for Rochdale) should have been a consolation goal and we should have been clear of them, as Tony Warner has not made a save.
"I can't have a go at the lads, they've given everything and they've had a real good go against a decent side.
"It's a spawny goal with the last kick of the game that robs them of three points."
