Aaron Lescott's late strike for Walsall denied Dave Penney a win in his first game as Bristol Rovers manager.
Will Grigg fired the Saddlers ahead from Darryl Westlake's cross, but Jo Kuffour's introduction at half-time changed the game.
Kuffour, 29, set up Will Hoskins to coolly slot home the equaliser, before the favour was returned and Kuffour volleyed Rovers in front.
But Lescott's fierce drive earned his side a deserved share of the spoils.
Bristol Rovers manager Dave Penney told BBC Radio Bristol: "It would be nice to get three points but it'll take time. I'm hoping we can pick points up quickly but I've got to get my message across to them.
"Every manager is looking to strengthen in the January transfer window and you're back in the sweet shop if you like.
"We only have two strikers in the building in Will Hoskins and Jo Kuffour and we need more experience in there."
