Chris O'Grady's goal handed all three points to Rochdale in a scrappy encounter with Dagenham and Redbridge.
A stalemate seemed to be on the cards for long periods, but O'Grady took advantage of Scott Doe's hesitancy in defence and slotted home from 12 yards.
Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and O'Grady both squandered first-half opportunities before Bas Savage poked an effort wide.
With the Daggers desperate for a goal, keeper Tony Roberts came close when he headed wide from a late corner.
Rochdale manager Keith Hill told BBC Radio Manchester: "Absolutely superb, today was a bit of an ugly match but we knew what we had to withstand and we did it well.
"Chris is a superb player, he's a target man but a goalscoring target man and his mobility and hold up play are superb and deserves his goals.
"We had to come up with a defensive solution to nullify the opposition and I thought it worked brilliantly."
