Gary Alexander's simple late header earned Brentford a fourth consecutive League One victory.
The Bees took an early lead when Charlie MacDonald set up Robbie Simpson to slot home from the edge of the area.
Dagenham & Redbridge responded when Romain Vincelot swept home Danny Green's right-wing cross.
Toumani Diagouraga hit the woodwork for the home side before substitute Nicky Forster's first touch provided Alexander with an easy headed finish.
Brentford boss Andy Scott told BBC London 94.9: "We were poor. You can make excuses but we made basic errors but we have come away with three points.
"We had enough chances to win it but we probably didn't play well enough to convince people we should have won it.
"I spoke to Sheffield United about the manager position but it wasn't right for me, but I am an ambitious manager and we are an ambitious club.
"I'd like to strengthen in the transfer window and I have given the board a list of players I'd like to enhance the squad with."
Dagenham and Redbridge Assistant boss Terry Harris told BBC London 94.9: "It's disappointing at the moment because we got back in it with a fantastic equaliser and in the second half we had our chances.
"We got caught with a sucker-punch where we should have cleared our lines and our indiscipline has cost us dearly.
"We have to be positive and try and turn this around on Monday."
