Brighton survived the loss of defender Inigo Calderon after just seven minutes to earn a hard-fought draw against promotion rivals Charlton.
Johnnie Jackson scored a penalty - his 10th goal of the season - on three minutes after a foul on Joe Anyinsah.
And Spaniard Calderon was shown a straight red card soon after following a crunching tackle on Therry Racon.
But Brighton equalised on 36 minutes as striker Glenn Murray expertly hooked in a ball from defender Adam El-Abd.
Brighton manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex: "I think we were outstanding today. Forget about the referee, he made two early decisions.
"I think the penalty was a clear penalty, but he didn't book anyone so he made a mistake.
"I think Caldy's [Calderon] tackle was more spectacular than anything else. It's a one-foot tackle. And then it's all about Brighton. To still play like that is all about desire, commitment, being proud.
"It's all about the fans. A few weeks ago I wasn't happy. Today the fans helped us, they were the 11th man on the pitch."
