Leyton Orient rode out a late storm to pick up a much-needed win at Tranmere.
Stephen Dawson capitalised on some sloppy Rovers defending to fire the visitors into the lead.
Another error on the stroke of half time saw Scott McGleish make it 2-0 after Gunnar Nielsen spilled Paul M'Poku's effort at the striker's feet.
Scott Wootton raised Rovers hopes when he turned home Aaron Cresswell's free-kick, but O's keeper Jason Brown was in fine form and Ian Goodison hit the bar.
After two straight league defeats at home, Rovers are now kept out of the League One relegation zone purely on goal difference.
But Les Parry's men aim to bounce back in Tuesday night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern-semi-final against Huddersfield Town (14 December, 1945 GMT).
Tranmere Rovers manager Les Parry told BBC Radio Merseyside:
"They defended well. Defending is part of the game, and Russell Slade will be made up with his defence and goalkeeper.
"I'd like Prenton Park to be a fortress and it's not at the moment because our away form is better than our home form.
"We need to get back on track, so Tuesday can't come quickly enough."
Leyton Orient boss Russell Slade told BBC London 94.9: "It was a great win and probably an unlikely win to a lot of people, with us having a few players out today. But I'm really proud of them. They dug so deep.
"In the second half, we were under a lot of pressure. I thought we were excellent in the first period, scored two goals and probably could have scored three.
"We were in control enough I felt, up until they scored and that rocked us a little bit."
