James Brown hit a superb first-half matchwinner as Hartlepool dented Bournemouth's promotion push.
The visitors were unlucky not to take the lead on 30 minutes when Brown's curled effort clipped the bar.
But, two minutes later, Brown cut in from the left and fired home from long range for the only goal of the game.
Anton Robinson hit the side netting and Jason Pearce shot over from close range as the home side pushed for an equaliser, but Hartlepool held on.
Victory lifts Mick Wadsworth's men up to 12th - just four points off the play-offs.
Bournemouth are now fifth, three points adrift of the automatic promotion places.
Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Solent: "We were hoping for the early goal and they got it - and then it's always difficult to break them down.
"I thought Lyle Taylor was excellent when he came on. He was the one who created the chances and, on another day, he would have scored.
"We created a couple of chances that we should have taken, our play in the final third wasn't great."
Hartlepool United first-team coach Mick Wadsworth tells BBC Tees:
"It was a resolute performance. We defended ever so well, played some decent football on the break and scored a great goal from James Brown.
"They are victories that are very sweet because we didn't play the great football we've been playing at times, but we've come and done the job and that's a really good feeling.
"It's a hard-earned victory and, if you're going to do anything in the league, then you have to get those sort of victories."
