A late strike from Lee Hughes earned Paul Ince his first victory as Notts County manager.
The veteran forward stabbed in from Craig Westcarr's cross for his sixth goal of the campaign to end a run of four straight league defeats.
Earlier, keeper Rob Burch made a fine save to deny Swindon's David Prutton.
Charlie Austin's header was cleared off the line by Notts' Mike Edwards as the visitors dropped to 20th place, just two points above the Magpies.
Notts County boss Paul Ince told BBC Radio Nottingham: "Full credit's got to go to the players. They're the ones that are out there.
"Sometimes when you use the word relieved, you put pressure on yourself. But there was never any pressure on us.
"We've been playing well, we played well against Southampton, we played well against Tranmere and things just haven't gone for us.
"It was great for everyone to get the monkey off their back and to win that first game. We've got to build from there now."
Swindon Town manager Danny Wilson told BBC Wiltshire: "We think we've seen the game out and done all the hard work and then get undone with a very, very poor goal at the end.
"We've turned off, we've not stopped the cross coming in and completely lost him [Lee Hughes] in the box and that's what the wiley old fox does at times.
"Young lads are going to make difficult decisions and are going to make mistakes but if we're going to persevere with them [young players] then we've got to be backing them."
