Brentford defeated promotion-chasing Colchester to earn their fourth consecutive League One away win.
Gary Alexander gave the Bees the lead, finishing from close range after Marcus Bean flicked on Sam Saunders' corner.
Brentford keeper Richard Lee denied Kayode Odejayi and Ashley Vincent sliced over, while Bean headed wide for the visitors just after the break.
But Charlie McDonald finished Michael Spillane's low cross in the closing stages to seal Brentford the win.
Colchester United manager John Ward told BBC Essex: "We just got stuck in the blocks a little bit, we got going towards half time. But we lacked the kind of fire power we have had in recent weeks.
"It was a day that has disappointed and fed the critics.
"If there are people who want to have a wee grumble - well, tonight is their night."
