A Gary Jones penalty gave Rochdale a deserved point against 10-man Carlisle.
Defender Lubo Michalik was adjudged to have tackled Nicky Adams from behind in the area, though the Czech appeared to make contact with the ball.
Despite this, he was shown a red card and Jones stepped up to tuck the ball into the bottom right corner.
Earlier, the home side took the lead after James Berrett's corner was headed in by Gary Madine, but by the end they were holding on for a nervy point.
Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott tells BBC Radio Cumbria: "I'm a little bit disappointed, we played in fits and starts, played some smashing stuff at times in the first half but surrendered a bit of ground in the second half to an extent which led to them getting a little bit in the ascendency.
"They caused a few problems, culminating in the penalty and sending off, and after that I thought we defended very well.
"We didn't look like conceding after that but we didn't look like we were going to win the game."
