Brentford moved up to 13th in the table with their third away win of the season at struggling Plymouth.
The Bees took the lead when Marcus Bean followed up after home keeper Roman Larrieu had brilliantly saved Michael Spillane's effort.
The hosts drew level through Rory Fallon's spectacular volley after Onsimor Bhasera's cross.
Charlie MacDonald secured the points for the visitors, deflecting Spillane's shot into the net.
Plymouth Argyle manager Peter Reid told BBC Radio Devon: "I can't fault the players for effort, they gave us everything. All I can say is that it's schoolboy errors, I've been on about clean sheets, keeping it tight and we haven't done it.
"We didn't cause Brentford enough problems and they played a system where they had three in the middle of the park and three up front and we didn't handle it very well.
"To concede off two dead ball situations is very poor from our point of view."
Brentford boss Andy Scott told BBC London 94.9: "It was a fantastic result.
"We played a team that was in the Championship and if you consider the players they've got, the squad they've got, the manager they've got and the injuries we've got.
"Everyone here today saw that we are a team that are 100% behind each other."
